Pianist Willie MacCalder is exceptional. He plays rollicking, boogie
piano that easily challenges Johnnie Johnson for the top spot. Willie
MacCalder covers a wide range of solo blues and R&B styles, mixing
traditional songs and originals, boogies and barrelhouse, singing
in a laid back, weary-sounding Jerry Lee Lewis-style that suits his
piano playing very well.
Willie’s trademark piano stylings of pounding the keys
and driving the band. have won him a number of ‘music poll
awards’ and contribute greatly to the Powder Blues instantly
identifiable sound.
As a solist or part of a band, Willie songs found on his album "Broken
Down Piano" are audience participation songs that he put to
good use and will having your audience doing the Boogie Woogie in
no time.
Willie MacCalder, was born in Victoria and raised in Edmonton where he developed his craft by playing in a number of teen bands, until, in the mid sixties, he found great success with his own band, ‘Willie and the Walkers’. They signed with Capitol Records and enjoyed a number of pop hits on rock radio, touring extensively through out the U.S. and Canada.
in Vancouver in the mid seventies Willie met Tom Lavin where they discovered their mutual love of the blues. He and Tom together were founding members of the "Powder Blues Bands".
Currently, he has a solo album as well, entitled ‘Broken Down Piano’ on Jay-El Records.
